Hetton Silver Band was founded on the 1st April, 1887. The brass band was associated with miners from Hetton Colliery in Hetton-le-Hole. The band purchased a small plot of land in South Market Street from the Hetton Coal Company for £25, and built a tin hut there to meet and practice in.
Hetton Prize Silver Band won the one thousand guinea trophy Grand Shield on the 28th of September, 1912. The national competition was held at Crystal Palace, London. William Straughan conducted the band playing the test piece, 'Emelia' by Gaetano Donizetti.
Co-Curate is a project which brings together online collections, museums, universities, schools
and community groups to make and re-make stories and images from North East England and Cumbria.
