Halton Medieval Settlement
In Medieval times, there was a larger settlement at Halton (classed as a shrunken Medieval village). In the 13th century the manor and lordship of Halton was held in the tenure by Halton family; there was a sizable agricultural village. However, in 1385 it was wasted by the Scots and by 1719 the village had shrunk to only two farms. The remains of the Medieval settlement are visible as a series of earthworks around the current farm at Halton. The remains of the Medieval settlement of Halton are a Scheduled Monument, including 3 separate areas of legal protection. The first and more northerly area contains the remains of a number of rectangular enclosures with a series of house platforms at their west end. The second area is located to the south contains a second group of rectangular enclosures and to the south of this there is another group of enclosures, some of which are defined by level platforms that are considered to represent crofts. The third and most westerly area contains part of the former village green.
