Grindal House, St. Bees

Grindal House in St. Bees is a substantial 3-storey building, located on Main Street (B5345). It was built in the mid-19th century, in close proximity to the Railway Station. In 1852 a printed advert lists "Brindle's Hotel (Opposite the Whitehaven and Furness Railway Station). James Brindle. Commercial and Family Boarding Establishment, St Bees."[1] It was also previously known as "St Bees Hotel". Grindal House later served as a boarding house for St Bees School but stood empty for several years when the school temporarily closed in 2015. In 2022, planning application was made to convert the house into a hotel with self-contained accommodation apartments.[2] Now (2024) available to book as "Grindal Studio Apartments - Newly Opened Luxury Accommodation, a property with a shared lounge". Grindle House is Grade II listed on the National Heritage List for England. The forecourt wall, gate, & end piers to the front of Grindal House are separately Grade II listed.

Presumably, the house is named after Archbishop Edmund Grindal, who was born in St Bees in 1519. He went on to become Archbishop of York and later Archbishop of Canterbury. Grindle founded St Bees School in 1583.
