Born at Pelton, County Durham,youngest of 10 children, son of John George Taylor of Lancashire and Sarah Woolley of Hatfield, Herefordshire. His father was a coal miner at Liverpool, moving to Pelton in the 1860s. Thomas too worked as a miner and married Mary Ellen Pinkney of Tudhoe Village in 1901. He was empolyed as a miner at West Pelton until enlisting in the army in 1908, and had become a Sergeant by the time of the First World War.
