Fort Walney

Fort Walney was a military installation built by the War Office between 1909 and 1911, situated in what is now Furness Golf Club in North Walney. The Fort included a battery of two 6-inch guns, which were manned by two companies of Royal Garrison Artillery, two blockhouses, a magazine, a shelter, an observation tower and auxiliary buildings. The battery was in operation until 1943. After the Second World War, the observation tower, became a Coastguard lookout tower. Most of the other buildings of the former fort were demolished. The coastguard tower was in use until the 1990s; it was later converted for residential use.
