Fenham Monastic Grange (ruins)
There are ruins of a monastic grange at Fenham in Northumberland - a farm complex owned by the Benedictine priory of Lindisfarne, on nearby Holy Island. A large stone manor house was built here in 1339, and a moat was dug around it in 1385. A defensive pele tower is also thought to have been added later. In 1560, after the Dissolution of the Monasteries, it was described as a "tower in good repair". After the Dissolution it was granted, as a township, to Sir William Reade, a captain of Berwick upon Tweed.[1] The grange was still standing in 1782, but was in ruins by the mid 19th century, with only the foundations remaining. Today the site is visible a series of earthwork banks and ditches; it is a Scheduled Ancient Monument. In the past it has also been referred to as 'Fenham Tower' and questionably as 'Fenham Castle'.[2]
