Earl Street, Carlisle

Earl Street is a short street, off Warwick Road, in the centre of Carlise. It was laid out on land belonging to the Earl of Lonsdale, hence the name of the street. At the north end of the street are Carlisle Courts of Justice, in a new building, opened in 1992 (previously the court was located in the Tudor Citadel on English Street). Outside the courts stands a Statue of Francis Aglionby. On the west side of the street are former houses built in the 1830s, now offices and shops (odd numbers 1-11 are Grade II listed buildings on the National Heritage List for England). No. 13 Earl Steet is a former Police station, built as the County Police Headquarters in 1862, by JA Cory, with Flemish bond brickwork, now an office (Grade II listed). On the east side of the street is the former St George's URC Church of 1863 (now a restaurant).
