The compensation arch and basin carrying the River Rede at the base of the dam of Catcleugh Reseviour was built in 1899 by T. & C. Hawksley for the Newcastle and Gateshead Water Company. It is Grade II listed on the National Heritage List for England.
Compensation water is the flow that must be discharged from a reservoir to maintain the water rights of landowners and other water users downstream of it. In Britain, the volume of compensation water from most reservoirs was typically set by an Act of Parliament.
