Cassop Colliery (1840 - 1878)

Sinking of the colliery at Cassop began in 1832; Cassop Colliery began production in 1840 and its first coal was shipped from Hartlepool. A further shaft (Vale) was sunk in 1856. However, Vale Pit closed in 1877 and the Five Quarter and Main Coal seam were abandoned in 1878.[1]
