Bus depot, Sandyford

There is a former bus depot on Portland Terrace, in the Sandyford area of Newcastle. The bus depot was originally built in 1930 for United Automobile Services, in a Greek Doric style, to designs of Marshall & Tweedy of Newcastle upon Tyne and London; the roof structure by A & J Main & Co Ltd of Glasgow & London. The contractor was T. Clements & Sons, of Newcastle. There were mid and later 20th century alterations and additions. Most recently it was used by Arriva bus company. The site was put up for sale in 2016. The building is Grade II listed on the National Heritage List for England.

The site of the bus depot was previously part of the Cuttersfield estate, owned by the Foggin family. In c.1874, the site later became known as Portland Park (hense the name of the street), and included a bowling green and lawn tennis courts. The park keeper's house and bowling green still stand behind behind the former bus depot.
