Burnstones, Northumberland

Burnstones is a hamlet in Northumberland, located off the A689 road, about 6 miles south-west of Haltwhistle and 5 miles north of Alston. The settlement is situated by Thinhope Burn, about half mile upstream of its confluence with the River South Tyne. Knarsdale Hall (previously known as Burnstones), Burnstones Cottage and Burnstones Bridge all date from the 18th century. Burnstones Viaduct is a dramatic railway bridge which crosses both river and road. The Pennine Way passes through the settlement. A short distance east of the burn are Merit Hall and Merit Hall Cottage. Burnstones is part of Knarsdale with Kirkhaugh Civil Parish.
