Belsay Colliery (1923 - 1930)

Belsay Colliery, located to the west of Wallridge, about 2 miles south-west of Belsay Hall, was opened in 1923. In 1927, the colliery employed 97 people (66 working below, and 31 working on the surface).[1] A 7½-mile branch line, known as the Wallridge Mineral Railway, was developed from to Belsay Colliery to Darras Hall station, to connect with the South Gosforth and Ponteland railway. The Colliery, owned by Kirkheaton Colliery Co Ltd, was short-lived and closed in 1930. Today, part of the 'Reivers' Route 10 of the National Cycle Network, follows the old Wallridge Mineral Railway line.
