Aln Valley Railway

The Aln Valley Railway is a heritage railway operating on part the old branch line between Alnwick and Alnmouth, which closed back in 1968. Construction work on the heritage line began in March 2012 and the first short train rides started in 2013. The heritage railway now runs from the new Lionheart Station in Alnwick to a short distance beyond Greenrigg Halt (station).  The line crosses the Cawledge Viaduct. The railway is run by the Aln Valley Railway Trust, a registered charity, with the aim of eventually extending the line to Alnmouth Station

The Alnwick Branch Line, was built by Robert Stephenson, for the York, Newcastle & Berwick Railway. The 2¾ mile long line opened on the 5th of August 1850, and enabled direct train services between Alnwick and Newcastle, as well as connecting to the main line and on to Edinburgh. In 1887, the new Alnwick Railway Station was opened, replacing the original station on the outskirts of Alnwick. The branch line closed in 1968.
