It was the end of an era as the Green Market in Newcastle closed on the 31st January 2011. It was a historic market, originally a vibrant street market off Newgate Street, opposite St Andrew's church. It was moved to an indoor market in 1808.
The Second Tyne Tunnel opened to traffic on the 25th February 2011. Construction work had begun in the spring of 2008. On opening, the new tunnel operated two-lane bi-directional traffic - so that the original tunnel could be temporarily closed for refurbishment.
The memorial garden on the corner of Gallogate and St Andrew's Street was opened on the 23rd of May 2011, in honour of Sir Bobby Robson. The 'pocket park' has five stone plaques, sculpted by artist Graeme Mitcheson. The garden is in close proximity of St James' Park, where Bobby Robson managed Newcastle United from September 1999 to August 2004.
Google announced the winners of a voting competition to pick the best streets in Britain on the 6th of June, 2011. South Shore Street in Gateshead won the category for the 'most hippest street'. The street on the Gateshead Quays has the Baltic Centre for the Arts, the SAGE music centre and overlooks the Gateshaed Millennium Bridge. Call Lane in Leeds came second in the category and Whitecross Street in Islington was third.
Davy's Fish and Chip Shop in Winlaton Mill closed in 2007, but was recreated in Beamish Museum, where it reopened on the 14th July, 2011. The traditional fish and chip shop originally opened in 1937. The shop at Beamish incorporates the three-pan coal-fired range and other fixtures from Winlaton Mill.
'The Brothers' (aka 'Leaning Post') sculpture in Seaham was created by Brian Brown, who previously worked at Silksworth pit, and unveiled on the 31st July 2011 as part of the Seaham carnival. Celebrating Seaham's mining heritage, the sculpture of 3 miners represents the 3 mines of Seaham: Seaham Colliery, Dawdon Colliery and Vane Tempest.
The BT Business Centre is located on Harton Quay, South Shields, near the Shields Ferry landing. The building was designed by +3 Architecture of Newcastle and built by built for South Tyneside Council by Miller Construction Ltd. The building was completed in September 2011, funded by South Tyneside Council, and leased to BT.
The tail-end of 'Hurricane Katia' hit the North East on the evening of the 12th September 2011. There was a lot of damage around the region, including Fulwell Windmill, which had its sails broken as 70mph gusts that blasted through Wearside.
The Turner Prize exhibition, hosted at the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art in Gateshead, opens to the public on the 21st October, 2011. The exhibition had over 149,000 visitors.
Newcastle University's international branch campus in Malaysia, "NUMed", opened in November 2011. It is located in EduCity, Johor. This made Newcastle University the first UK university to offer medical degrees overseas, with the first Medical students from NUMed graduating in June 2014. The campus now teaches Biomedical Sciences as well as Medicine.
