West Learmouth
West Learmouth (aka 'Old Learmouth') is a small village in Northumberland, close to the border with Scotland. It is situated by Willow Burn and located about 12 miles south-west of Berwick and just over a mile south of Coldstream. West Learmouth is part of the civil parish of Carham. A local landmark is the Railway Viaduct of 1849, over Willow Burn, just to the north of West Learmonth. There is a second Railway Viaduct nearby, over Duddo Burn. There are a distinctive terrace of cottages, built in the late 18th century, which are listed for being unusually complete and relatively early group of farm labourers' cottages.
West Learmouth was once the site of a more substantive settlement - the deserted medieval village of Learmouth, which was largely destroyed by Scottish raiders and English rebels in the 16th century. Parts of the earlier settlement survived into the 18th century (a 1769 a map shows a mansion at West Learmouth and a group of buildings at East Learmouth). By the 19th century only two farms stood at the site of the village.[1]
