- 1938 - Edward Spurr (1907–1998), broke the world speed record (one-and-a half litre class engine) on Windermere, on Empire Day, the 8th September 1938.
- 1939 - Malcolm Campbell (1885 - 1948), set the water speed record four times, his highest speed being 141.74 mph in the Blue Bird K4, set on 19 August 1939 on Coniston Water.
