War Memorial, Whickham

The War Memorial in Whickham is located off Front Steet by the corner of Church Green and the Harry Clasper (former Council Buildings). The memorial was unveiled by Colonel R.H. Carr-Ellison CMG and dedicated by Reverend C.E. Little on the 19th August 1922. The memorial commemorates 66 local servicemen who lost their lives in the First World War. The memorial was designed by J.B. Renton of Whickham and built by HS Turner of Gateshead. The plot for the monument was gifted by Colonel Carr-Ellison.[1] Following the Second World War the names of 37 local men who died in that conflict were added. Additional names were later recorded on the monument for the WW1 Centenery. The memorial is Grade II listed on the National Heritage List for England.
