Thomas Oliver (1791 - 1857)

Thomas Oliver (1791 - 1857) was an architect who played an important role in the redevelopment of the centre of Newcastle in the 19th century. He originally apprenticed as a stonemason in Scotland. He then worked and studied in Newcastle under John Dobson for six years until 1821, after which Oliver established his own independent practice as an architect. Whellan's 1855 Directory lists him under architects as "Oliver T. sen. 3, Picton-place".

His son, of the same name, was also an architect - Thomas Oliver, Jnr. (1824–1902).
