Temperley Memorial Fountain, Hexham

The Temperley memorial fountain is located in the Market Place in Hexham. The large ornamental red sandstone monument was built in 1901 by W.H. Knowles (Architect), G.W. Milburn (Sculptor), and J. Herman & Sons (Builder).[1] It was built to commemorate William A. Temperley (1819-1898) who was a prominent corn merchant in Hexham and Newcastle and a leading member of Hexham Congregational Church. The fountain replaced a smaller pant of 1703 which had been dedicated to Sir Richard Allgood. The fountain in the current monument is no longer functional. In the 1950's it was topped by and electric light; this was later replaced with a stone cross. The memorial is Grade II listed on the National Heritage List for England.
