The Stockton and Darlington Railway was the world's first public railway to use steam locomotives. The opening ceremony was held on the 27th of September, 1825. On that day, George Stephenson and others from the Stockton and Darlington Railway Company made an experimental journey between Shildon and Darlington. They travelled in a coach, named 'Experiment', pulled by the steam engine 'Locomotion No. 1'.
