Statue of Edward Moseley Perkins

Edward Mosely Perkins (1821-1871) came to Birtley as a partner in its Iron Company and two local pits in 1858, and lived in Birtley Hall. He also served as a Councillor, Magistrate and later became Lord Mayor of Newcastle. Perkins joined the Durham Rifle Volunteer Corps, and rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. The memorial statue was paid for by public subscription and unveiled in 1874 in front of a large crowd of locals and a detachment from the Durham Rifle Volunteers.[1]
