Shiremoor House Farm
Shiremoor House Farm is a public house and resturant, located in a former farm at the north end of Middle Engine Lane, off Norham Road in Murton/West Chirton, North Shields - about ¾ miles south-east of today's Shiremoor. Shire Moor covered a wide area, originally part of Tynemouthshire Moor (common land). Shire Moor was enclosed from this in 1790, with the Duke of Northumberland retaining land and mining rights. It is not clear if Shiremoor House Farm dates from that period; the farm buildings seen today date from the mid 19th century. Historically, Shiremoor House was part of Monkseaton Township in the ancient parish of Tynemouth. Whellan's 1855 directory of Northumberland lists Thomas Bell as farmer at Shire Moor. The farm became part of Chirton Civil Parish in the late 19th century.
