Private Tommy Young of High Spen was honoured in a ceremony at Saltwell Park in Gateshead on the 30th of June 1918, the day after being awarded the Victoria Cross by King George in London. The ceremony was attended by a crowd of over 10,000 people - the largest public gathering in the park since Queen Victoria's Dimond Jubilee celebrations. Young, serving in the 9th Battalion, of the Durham Light Infantry, had shown exceptional bravery saving 9 men under heavy fire at Bucquoy in France during the First World War. After the war he returned to working at High Spen Pit.
