Ryhope at War
During the First World War the Illustrated Chronicle published photographs of soldiers and sailors from Newcastle and the North East of England. These have been made available by Newcastle Libraries. Below are some of the service personnel from Ryhope. The war dead from both World Wars are remembered at the War Memorial on The Green, at Ryhope.
During the Second World War, in March 1944, a damaged Halifax bomber, returning from a raid on Nuremberg, crash-landed in Ryhope - it's pilot, Cyril Barton, was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross.
