Text Appearing Before Image: major portion of their AVhitley propertywent to other members of the Dove family. It is possible that this circumstance weighed with ThomasDove II. in selecting a site for a mansion in that part of ArnoldsClose, which was now assuming the name of Cullercoats, stillvariously spelt in the deeds. The date on a wooden lintel on thenorth side of the house was 1682, which may be regarded asfixing the period when the house was finished. The initials ofThomas Dove and of Elizabeth Dove, his wife, together with thefigure of a dove, are carved on a finial surmounting the east 21 gable.* Here Thomas Dove continued to reside; it was to thishouse that he in all probability conducted his wife; here hischildren were born; and here he died whilst most of them wereyet minors. Xo other member of the family is so thoroughlyassociated witli Cullercoats as Thomas Dove II., and it was inhis day that the place may be said to have reached the heightof its prosperity, more especially as a port of exportation. He married Elizabeth, daughter of Eichard Shipton of Lyth,in Yorkshire, and the date of the marriage may have beenbetween the 15th December, 1081, and the 5th January, 1682.On the first of these dates there was executed a lease by ThomasDove of Whitley, gentleman, to Jane Lorrance of Coller- * The perverted vision of a subsequent generation converted tliis bird into asparrow and thus the house has acquired the name of Sparrow Hall, which itstill bears. 22 coates, widow, of a hoitse tliat borders on the west end of GeorgeHarriss house, for a term of fifty years for 10s. annual rent.Witnesses : William Dove, Robert Dove. There are two things to be noted here: (1) that this lease isgranted by Thomas Dove only, (2) that, judging from the namesof the witnesses, there were plenty of Doves in the neighbour-hood besides those of the main line. In fact they were sonumerous as almost to constitute a clan.
