Northern Spire Bridge under construction

  • Description

"A long time in the coming. The idea of another bridge across the Wear at Sunderland dates back to 2003. However, it was not until July 2015 that construction started, following a number of problems with the design, contractors and funding. Opening of the bridge was due in spring 2018 but has been delayed due to bad weather during the preceding winter. Some extremely tall cherry pickers can be seen working on the bridge. Timber Beach Road in the foreground. The 105 metre high pylon is the tallest structure in Sunderland." Photo by Oliver Dixon, 2018.
