Description
"Corby Bridge (otherwise known as Wetheral viaduct) is a magnificent structure of five arches, 200 metres long and 30 metres high which carries the Newcastle to Carlisle railway line high over the River Eden. Constructed between 1830 and 1834, the bridge is now Grade 1 listed. The bridge is the only crossing point of the river between Armathwaite (some 12 km upstream) and Warwick Bridge. The temptation for pedestrians to cross by the tracks was considerable, which led to the railway company constructing the attached walkway in 1851. The toll for crossing was set at a halfpenny, later rising to one penny, but crossing is now free." Photo by Oliver Dixon, 2014. -
