Written Rock of Gelt

  • Description

Quarry inscriptions near Brampton (Cumbria), by the side of the River Gelt, sometimes mischievously known as the Rotten Wreck of Guilt. The inscriptions (RIB 1007--15) date it to AD 207 and, presumably, the Severan restoration of the curtain wall. Scanned from the 1921 8th edition of the Handbook to the Roman Wall. Handbook p.329
