Saltom Pit

Whitehaven

  • Description

Saltom Pit, Whitehaven, Cumbria, UK with Fairy Rock in the background (so called because legend says that is where the last fairy was spotted in Whitehaven). It is told that a community of fairies lived here in harmony with their human neighbours. One man from neighbouring St Bees fell in love and married the Queen of the fairies but he was only allowed to visit Fairy Rock on certain days. When he was swayed by jealousy to visit on another occasion a huge storm broke and his boat was capsized, drowning him. It is said that on certain days you can still hear the fairies singing.
