Newcastle (East) Chest Clinic
-
Description
RefNo: HO.ECC "Newcastle Tuberculosis Dispensary was established in February 1913, following the National Insurance Act of 1911, which made all forms of tuberculosis notifiable diseases, and required local authorities to provide chest clinics. Initially occupying two rooms in the Town Hall, the clinic moved to permanent premises at Ridley Villas, 91 New Bridge Street, in December 1914. In-patient treatment was provided at Barrasford Sanatorium, Stannington Sanatorium, and the City Hospital for Infectious Diseases (later known as Walker Gate Hospital). In 1916 a new 62 bed sanatorium with open-air accommodation was opened at Walker Gate, which was extended on several occasions over the years. In 1948 the Dispensary was transferred from the City Council to the new National Health Service, and in 1952 a second clinic was established at the Northern Counties Chest Hospital (HO.NCC). The Dispensary was renamed Newcastle (East) Chest Clinic, serving Newcastle east of the Great North Road, with Longbenton, Gosforth and Castle Ward...." -
