The old market cross
-
Description
"I could find no information about this old stone construction, but it looks like the base and pillar of an old market cross, which has been hijacked by a weather-vane on its head. The stones forming the base are well worn, as if walked upon for a very long time. Updated 15th Jan 2013. According to this Northumberland County Council document http://www.google.co.uk/url?q=http://www.northumberland.gov.uk/idoc.ashx%3Fdocid%3D62a6b397-49b0-4bb4-8fd2-984ad47dcb3a%26version%3D-1&sa=U&ei=plD1UIfNGOfX0QWP4YHIAg&ved=0CEMQFjAL&usg=AFQjCNEARzPJqvBGxnEzT192Lpw_YAB1LQ this is indeed the old market cross from the village, most of which is originally medieval, but which was repaired in the 19th century and converted to a fountain. It's now a Grade II Listed structure." Photo by Richard Law, 2008. -
