Housesteads Fort - Commanding Officer's House, Latrine

  • Description

"This latrine for the use of the commanding officer should not be confused with the communal latrines elsewhere in the fort. Standing at the far end of this little room, looking downwards and to your left and to the left of this picture, you can see the drain (not visible in the picture). A gold signet ring with a garnet intaglio (an engraved garnet), dating from the late first to second century, was found in the drain in 1968. It probably belonged to the commanding officer - how he must have cursed! The ring is on display at the Great North Museum: Hancock, Newcastle-upon-Tyne." Photo by Duncan Graham, 2014.
