Housesteads Roman Fort

    Hadrian built 12 forts along the wall, Housesteads Fort is is the best preserved. It a five-acre site, with a small civil community, to serve the needs of the soldiers outside the walls. Most forts were rectangular and had four gates for access and egress. The major buildings were granaries, barracks for the soldiers, headquarters, commandant's house, hospital and latrines, with water borne sewerage.
