Description
The Durham Miners Gala on July 14th 2012 is a busy family event and labour movement rally/march. The Durham Miners Gala is a traditional miner’s event dating back to the 19th century. Every year miners and their community would march into Durham travelling miles in the process from their pit villages. The gala developed out of the miners’ trade unionism, with the first Union being established in 1869. The Durham Miners’ Association organised the first Gala, which was held in 1871 in Wharton Park, Durham. To try and enhance the nostalgic, retrospective nature this event now has, these images have attempted to recreate the technique of hand colouring monochrome images, popularly used in past decades in working class culture for family and community portraits, well before digital technology.
