North front of Grainger Market, 1-37 Nelson Street, NE1

  • Description

"Built c 1835 by John Dobson for Richard Grainger. The Market is one of Grainger's great buildings. The north range consists of nos. 1 to 37 (odd numbers); the end bays are the returns of nos. 95-137 Grainger Street and nos. 11-43 Clayton Street. There are the familiar wings, plain links and pavilions, but, compared with the Grainger Street and Clayton Street sides, they are fairly plain, with decorative pilasters only on the wings. The buildings are Grade I listed http://list.historicengland.org.uk/resultsingle.aspx?uid=1024813 . The Buildings of Grainger Town - No.55. See [[4406042]]." Photo by Mike Quinn, 2014.
