    "The Gothic Ruin was originally built as a formal gatehouse to Hardwick Park. It was built c1764 by James Paine for John Burdon as a sham ruin in Gothic style, incorporating medieval masonry from Guisborough Priory. It originally had a single room above the archway with a walkway leading to a spiral staircase within the rounded turret providing extensive views over the Park from the top [[2643271]] National Heritage List for England Entry Number: 1322811 https://www.historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1322811 After years of neglect and decay [[253362]] Durham County Council has recently restored the building to its original state [[1171281]]" Photo by Andrew Curtis, 2011.
