These are the arms of the Heath Family of County Durham. Of Anglo-Saxon origin, the family has long been associated with medical research and hospitals. It was a major funder of the Newcastle Medical School in 1851 when it was subservient to Durham University College of Medicine. The motto, on translation, is "Hope for the better".
