Northern Goldsmiths, Blackett Street and Pilgrim Street corner

  • Description

"Built around 1895 as a jewellers shop with offices and workshops above and later altered in 1930s. The square clock topped with a female figure representing Venus, designed by Alfred Glover, was added to the building in 1935. The red domed roof houses a peal of bells which are now once again linked to the clock. Northern Goldsmiths is a local jewellery business. Inside, many of the original fittings survive in excellent condition. Because of the need for a high level of light in showrooms and work rooms, there is an unusual high percentage of windows.
