Text Appearing Before Image: ing him to take the surname and arms of Blackett (March,1734), his estate was worthy of the name he bore. To follow in the footsteps of his grandfather, to fill the samepublic offices, and render the same public services as he had done. SIR WALTER CALVERLEY BLACKETT. 3^1 were among the first objects of ambition to which this untitled heirof the Blacketts aspired. The new member gave early and regular attend-ance to his parliamentary duties, was soon selected for committeework, and before many months were over had charge of a local Bill—a Bill for lighting and watching the town. Such a measure hadbeen long in contemplation, and the Mayor (Mr. IMatthew Ridley), 312 SIR WALTER CALVERLEY BLACKETT. in giving evidence before a Committee of the House on the subject, over which Mr. Blackett presided, told a dismal story of the con-dition of the streets after dark, sho Note About Images Please note that these images are extracted from scanned page images that may have been digitally enhanced for readability - coloration and appearance of these illustrations may not perfectly resemble the original work. -
