Text Appearing Before Image: insurrections of1715 and 1745; combatants in the Peninsula and later scenes ofconflict; and milder-mannered men who stayed at home with theirtenants, and fulfilled the duties of the county gentry. The mostillustrious of them all fought his countrys battles gloriously on the CUTHBERT, LORD COLLINGWOOD. 607 seas, and was raised to the peerage; another of them representedMorpeth in Parhament; others occupied the Shrievalty, the Mayor-alty, and the Recordership of Newcastle. At the beginning of last century the representative of one branchof the Northumberland Collingwoods, which had long been settledat Ditchburn, in the parish of Eglingham, was Edward Collingwood,of Byker. Besides the patrimonial estate of Ditchburn, Mr. EdwardCollingwood owned the adjoining township of Shipley; an estate atNorth Dissington, in the parish of Newburn (which he had purchasedof Sir R. Delaval in 1673 for ;i^3,8oo); the house in which he livedat Byker, with the land attached to it; and two rent charges from Text Appearing After Image: abbey lands at Newminster and Morpeth. So we learn from his will,dated April 8th, 1701. In that document, after providing for hisdaughter Dorothy, he bequeathed the property at Byker, NorthDissington, and Shipley, and the rent charges at Newminster, to hisson Edward, and gave Ditchburn for life to his nephew, CuthbertCollingwood (i). Through this act of kindness and family affectionCuthbert, the nephew, was raised to a position of affluence, which, ina short time, was considerably improved by the death of his cousinDorothy. The young lady, making her will on the 2nd December,1701, only eight months after her father signed his, bequeathedto Cuthbert a yearly rent of ;^6o out of North Dissington andShipley, and after making numerous bequests of plate, linen, etc., to 6o8 CUTHBERT, LORD COLLINGUOOD. friends and relatives, she made him her residuary legatee.
