Text Appearing Before Image: s. Hewas never what could be called a confirmed drunkard, or even aregular tippler, but he gave way too often to the temptation to drown dull care. Soon he grew careless of his personal appear-ance, became emaciated and haggard, as well as sluggish, put onprematurely the aspect of great age, and could not be roused outof his lethargic despondency by friendly remonstrance or cheerfulencouragement. JOHN CUNNINGHAM. 679 Down to within tliree months of his death, however, he continuedto perform in the several theatres of what used to be called thenorthern circuit. He took his last benefit at Darlington, on the20th of June, 1773. He was then, as he wrote to Mr. Slack, verypoorly, and he soon afterwards returned to Newcastle to die. Cunningham had always been averse to having his portrait taken;but a few days before he died, as he was dragging his frail frameabout the vicinity of his residence, Bewick, the engraver, walkedafter him, stopped, loitered behind, repassed him, and in this manner Text Appearing After Image: JOHN CUNNINGHAM. obtained a sketch of the dying bard. The poet is representedcarrying in his hand a handkerchief, or, rather, the remains of one,containing a herring and some other small matter of food. He died on the i8th of September, 1773, and on the 20th, whilethe organist played a solemn dirge, he was buried in St. Johnschurchyard, Newcastle. It afterwards occurred to some of hisfriends, that he who had been poor and neglected during hislife should have a handsome memorial inside the church nowthat he was dead. But the project was never carried out, and 68o JOHN CUNNINGHAM. eventually his old friend, Thomas Slack, raised over his grave amonumental stone bearing the following inscription:— Here lie the Remains ofJohn Cunningham.Of his Excellence As a Pastoral Poet His Works will remain a Monument For Ages After this temporary Tribute of Esteem is in Dust forgotten. He Died in Newcastle, Sept. i8th, 1773, Aged 44. Also of his Friend and Associate, Robert Carr, Printer.
