The circumstances surroundinghis apprenticeship, and the manner in which he was led to takeup the art of wood-engraving may be read at length on pages 227-8of the present volume. One of his early efforts, a bar-bill woodcutof the George and Dragon, attracted so much attention thatorders came to his master from all the local printers of chap-booksand childrens literature for similar embellishments, and his handswere soon full of work. A set of blocks that he cut for an editionof Gays Fables delighted Mr. Beilby to such an extent that he THOMAS BE WICK. 267 sent impressions to the Society for the Encouragement of Arts andManufactures, and they obtained a premium. The award camejust as Bewick had completed his apprenticeship, and he describesin glowing terms the emotion with which he received it. Released from his legal ties, Bewick worked a few weeks for j\Ir.Beilby at a guinea a week, and then went home to Cherryburn,where he employed himself in cutting blocks for Thomas Angus, Text Appearing After Image: THOMAS BEWICK S WORKSHOP. a Newcastle printer, and others, and amused himself with hisfavourite pursuit of angling. The following year he made atour through Scotland, on foot, and then proceeded to Londonwith the object of improving himself in his art. This object hefailed to accomplish. He learned nothing, and after twelvemonths experience of London people and London ways he set 2 68 THOMAS BEWICK. his face northwards and entered into partnership with his oldmaster, Ralph Beilby. He took his brother John as apprentice,and for eight years the two brothers walked every week to Cherry-burn to visit the old home. In 1785 Bewick lost his mother,father, and elder sister, and the following year he married, at St.Johns Church, Newcastle, Isabella, daughter of Robert Elliott, anOvingham farmer.
