Text Appearing Before Image: vicarof Gainford, the Queen of Durham villages, in 1594, he acquiredproperty in the parish, and erected the mansion-house of GainfordHall, a picturesque, many-gabled building, over the north door ofwhich his name and arms, with the date of erection (1600) may stillbe seen. His promotion in the Church was rapid, and his prefer-ments numerous and valuable. Upon the death or removal of JOHN CRADOCK. 653 Michael Colman, B.A. (who was presented in 1609, and the dateof whose departure has not been preserved), he obtained the living ofWoodhorn, another rural retreat, combining views of great beautyover both sea and land. Bishop Neile, in 1619, made him Arch-deacon of Northumberland, but this appointment he resigned a few-months afterwards to become the bishops spiritual chancellor andvicar-general. To heighten his dignity he was collated prebendaryof the fifth stall in Durham Cathedral, and made a Justice of thePeace; to increase his emoluments he was presented to the living ofNorthallerton. Text Appearing After Image: ■/ill V, iii*; Soon after Dr. Cradocks elevation to the spiritual chancellorshipcharges of a serious nature began to circulate in the diocese respect-ing the administration of his office. There were reports against himof extortion and abuse, if not of peculation and fraud. On the 28thof May, 1621, his conduct, and that of a similar offender, Dr.Lambe, were brought before the House of Commons. The Houseat the time was earnestly engaged in a discussion of grievances,amortg which abuses in the courts of law, both ecclesiastical and 654 JOHX CRADOCK. civil, were prominent. It was, therefore, ordered that The Sub-committee for Courts of Justice should take the examination ofwitnesses to prove the exactions and other misdemeanours of thesetwo clerical culprits.
