The work outlined in the present paper was undertaken fora variety of reasons, but none was more pressing than theobvious need of determining the sahent features of the existingFlora and Fauna of this section of South East Durham beforethe projected industrialisation of much of the area hadexterminated everything. Of great importance, too, was thenecessity of comparing the present vegetation with what hadbeen recorded a century ago in such works as BrewstersHistory of Stockton (1829) and Sharps History of Hartlepool(1818). When first planned, the work was intended to followecological lines, both experimentally and otherwise. Thisplan had to be abandoned immediately owing to the necessaryrestrictions placed upon photography and map-making whenwar broke out.
