Feb 2017 update: Campaigners are trying to save Dunelm House after Durham University announced its intention in December 2016 to demolish and replace it. The building needs major work, which Durham University calculate would cost £14.7m. Durham students' union Dunelm House was designed by the Architects' Co-Partnership and completed in March 1966, with a floor area of 3,979m sq and at a cost of almost £290,000. The engineers were Arup and the contractor John Laing. Dunelm House won both the RIBA Bronze Medal for 1966 and a Civic Trust Award. A Brutalist building on five levels, it was designed to be terraced to fit into the banks of the River Wear and originally to provide a student centre for a collegiate university and a university staff club. (The staff club section is now used as a language school.) Historic England recommended Grade II listing in 2016, but this was turned down by the Culture Secretary Karen Bradley. The Twentieth Century Society is appealing against the refusal. The Kingsgate concrete footbridge over the River Wear was designed by Ove Arup & Partners and completed in 1963. It is Grade I listed. Ove Arup considered this bridge his finest work.
