Paddling out over Knoxes Reef

  • Description

"A spring flood tide was running strongly southwards through the Kettle, but keeping out of the main channel allows kayakers to make progress. Crossing away from Inner Farne, the flow is considerably less over the rocks of Knoxes Reef, now about half covered. The Swaledale Outdoor Club group are about to paddle out over the shallows and head out for Staple Island and Longstone. Conditions here are deceptively calm - there's a bit of swell, a bit of wind, and fast tides, making for some rough and confused water between the islands." Photo by Andy Waddington, 2009.
