"...Municipal building, 1897 dated on plaque above door; by H.A. Cheers. Red engineering brick with sandstone ashlar dressings; Lakeland slate roof with copper dome. Long cruciform building with symmetrical gabled end to road. Gothic style with much carving. Main range 2 tall storeys, one wide bay between narrow octagonal battlemented turrets with small spires...." -
