Family Evacuating

  • Description

Image showing a family evacuating effects to a local school from the area threatened by Hartlepool's Great Timber Yard Fire in 1922. Household items can be seen piled against the wall, while a mangle is still positioned on the horse-drawn wagon. Thanks to firefighters tackling the blaze, the spread of the fire, starting at a timber yard near Union Street, was slowed enough for familes to evacuate furniture and belongings before the high winter's winds meant that the inferno engulfed their homes.
