Matfen

  • Description

The laundry at Matfen Hall during renovations in 1967, when it was being made ready for use as a home for disabled people. At first we thought the army occupation greetings painted on the wall were for for Christmas 1943, but it says "Minden greetings to all ranks" with a painting of the regimental badge. Minden Day is a regimental anniversary celebrated on 1st August by certain Army regiments. It is the forerunner of Yorkshire Day, celebrated on the same date, because some Yorkshire regiments were involved in the Battle of Minden that it celebrates.
