Description
Built in Bombay and launched on 12 October 1817. She was was placed in reserve until 1845, when she was re-armed with fewer guns and reclassified as a sixth-rate spar-decked corvette. From 1847-49 she served in the West Indies including anti-slavery duties, in 1850 she was based in Newfoundland and in 1852-7 served as part of the Pacific Squadron. She then served as a training ship before being sold in 1897 to entrepreneur George Wheatley Cobb, who restored her, and renamed her HMS Foudroyant. She was used as an as an accommodation ship, a training ship, and a holiday ship based in Falmouth then Portsmouth. She remained in service until 1986, after which she was again restored and renamed back to Trincomalee in 1992. She is now based at the historic dockyard museum in Hartlepool and is the oldest British warship still afloat. -
